Rugs are as crucial to your room décor as the color of your walls or the draperies hanging at your windows.
They can serve a purpose for many reasons:
They can define your space.
Rugs can be that accessory that ties everything together between your space(s).
They provide acoustics by absorbing sounds and helping people to hear conversations.
Rugs trap allergens.
DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER?
Yes. Resoundingly, yes!
There’s nothing more unsettling then to see a rug that is too small either for the space or the furniture.
Generally, the bigger the better when it comes to rugs. They should be proportionate to the size of your space and your furniture.
The size of your living space will determine the size of your rug. If your living space is large, you can easily handle a larger rug. Ideally the furniture can rest completely on the rug with inches to spare.
If your space is small, it is okay to purchase a rug that sits in front of the furniture but with inches to spare.
tip: you can use removable tape to outline the area desired to be covered
The rug should cover the area with your chairs pulled out from your dining table. To err on the side of caution, you should have 2 feet of rug on all sides of the table and chairs.
When purchasing a rug for your bedroom, it is ideal for the rug to extend 2.5 feet beyond the bed. In other words, if you have a queen size bed, an 8’x10’ rug would suffice and for a king size bed, you will want to purchase a 9’x 12’ rug.
In addition to the variety of sizes, there are a multitude of shapes to choose from including rectangle, circle or runner. When choosing a rug, first determine its size and function. Then choose between 1-2 colors, unless you want neutral, that complement the décor in your space. This can be the colors in your draperies, your furniture or even the walls. Once your purchase that perfect rug, you will be amazed at how your room comes together and how the rug definitely provides that final touch.
